PROJECT LOCATION: Asheville, NC
AWARDS WON: 2008 Standing Ovation Award for efforts to help provide clean air by reducing methane migration
In Asheville, NC, the Metropolitan Sewerage District wanted the landfill gas to blend with digester gas to run two Waukesha Engines and a sludge incinerator. With the help of Perennial Energy engineers, a system was devised to increase the size of the lances to the fluidized bed and to blend 5-psi landfill gas with 7-8 inches of water column digester gas with several backflow preventers to maximize both resources. The cooperation of several layers of in-house and consulting engineers was required. The projects have greatly alleviated the odors to neighbors, and housing in the area is now booming. In March 2006, Enerdyne Properties added a 1 megawatt Deutz on-site power generation plant that allows the utilization of excess gas and sells green power back to the gird at Progress Energy.
